The Island
Written by Ryan Hill
Featuring Nicole Devereaux, Ryan Hill, Lisa Moreira
Live Music by Tim Donahue
In the winter of 1889, Anton Chekhov diagnosed himself with tuberculosis. That spring he decided to take an arduous trans-Siberian trek to the distant exile settlement of Sakhali`n Island. His goals were never clear and his planning was poor. After a freezing and dangerous three-month long journey, he arrived at the unforgiving penal colony. In this cold, miserable place at the edge of civilization Chekhov found humanity at its worst and something new about himself. The Island is a journey through the wild landscapes of Siberia, Sakhalin and the mind of a thinking man facing his own mortality.
Nicole Devereaux is grateful for the interesting, often unearthly, characters that she has been privileged to play in her first year of professional theatre (with the fantastic people at the Ordway, Hardcover Theater, Sandbox Theatre, and Cromulent Shakespeare). She is even more grateful for the enduring support of her husband.
Composer, performer and live sound engineer, Tim Donahue has been directing and arranging for his live group, Eclectic Ensemble, as well as composing for theater and film.
Ryan Hill is a theatre artist, published writer and the Artistic Director of Sandbox Theatre. Upcoming projects include The Piano Tuner with Live Action Set and Sandbox’s Fall ’08 production of Mask of the Red Death.
Lisa Moreira was an Artistic Associate with 15 Head: a theatre lab before co-founding Sandbox Theatre, where she directed the collaboratively-created Zelda: Wonderland, and co-directed last fall's War With the Newts.
